It is well known that expectant mothers should include folic acid in their diet for the health and development of their unborn child but people forget that we need it in our diets as well.
If you are a woman and pregnant then it is advised that as part of your pregnancy diet you should get plenty of folic acid and if this is hard then take a supplement to make sure you are getting the recommended amount. In pregnant women folic acid can decrease the chances of down syndrome by 50 – 70%, it can also decrease the chance of birth defects and help your baby’s brain develop, especially in the first trimester.
It is less well known that getting a good amount of folic acid in your diet can also help protect YOU from serious diseases such as heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, anemia macular (retina) degeneration, rheumatoid arthritis and some cancers. Not getting enough folic acid oin your diet can also contribute to obesity and depression.
So what foods should you be eating to get more folic acid in your diet? It is recommended that you should be getting approximately 400mgs of folic acid a day. Folic acid can be found in;
