After the popularity of our last celebrity transformations for movie roles back in 2012 (has it really been that long!?), we decided that we would create a new post on 10 more amazing celebrity transformations for a movie role. This includes a few more up to date roles, and features healthy weight loss, unhealthy weight loss, healthy weight gain and unhealthy weight gain. Modern actors are always pushing themselves to make sure they look the part to add realism to their movies. Here are 10 of our more recent favorites:
Jonah Hill as always really been known for being overweight, but it often works well for the characters he plays. I perhaps know him best for his roles in Superbad and Knocked Up. Jonah started to slim down initially for his own health losing over 40lbs, however this has opened up different roles for him that previously might not have been accessible. The weight loss has been substantial, however in more recent months it has reportedly been up and down.
Matthew McConaughey always appears to have been great shape, most notably in roles such as a dragon slayer in Reign of Fire, and as a male stripper in Magic Mike. For his most recent film, the Dallas Buyers Club, he plays a real life cowboy that contracts HIV and tries to smuggle pharmaceuticals in from Mexico as treatment. McConaughey lost 47 lbs (about 21kg) to look the part, and claims he lost all the weight healthily with a nutritional expert losing an average of 3.5 lbs per week.
Probably best known for playing the Wolverine in the X-Men franchise of movies, Hugh Jackman has always been in tremendous shape. However in the more recent movies he really has taken his physique to the next level, which is clearly illustrated in the two images above. The image on the left is from the X-Men film (2000), whereas the image on the right is from the latest Wolverine film (2013). Hugh has been known to be a big fan of intermittent fasting, particular the 4 and 8 hour eating window variants, and has been known to consume as much as 6,000 calories a day while training to play Logan. This is why he is often referred to as Hugh “Jackedman”.
Super hot actress Scarlett Johansson has received some unfair criticism over the years for the changes in her physique, however no one can deny that she looks amazing playing the role of the Black Widow in the Avengers franchise. Johnasson employed Duffy Gaver, the same personal trainer that got Liam Hemsworth into god like shape for the role of Thor, to whip her up into shape to look the part of a deadly assassin.
Everyone was hugely impressed with actor Henry Cavill and his shredded physique for the role of Theseus in the film The Immortals. However he most recently packed on a huge amount of muscle onto that physique to play the role of Superman in The Man of Steel movie. Cavill trained under the watchful eye of Mark Twight, known best for his transformations in the movie 300, and put he put Cavill through some grueling training regimes to create his superhuman physique.
Stunning Charlize Theron shocked audiences around the world with her portrayal of Aileen in the movie Monster. Normally known for her beautiful looks andathletic body (take the film Aeon Flux as a great example), Charlize gained 30 lbs by eating Krispy Kreme donuts everyday. At first she said it was great, but she soon got sick of them!
Chris Pratt said his physique hit an all time low when he played the role of Brett in the film the delivery man. He was still overweight when he casted to play the part of Peter Quill in the upcoming film Guardians of the Galaxy, and he promised the directors that he would get in shape in time for filming. As you can see, he followed through on his promises and even had to give up his beloved pizza and beers!
Anne Hathaway has never really been out of shape; we had to search quite hard to find a more voluptuous picture of her shown above on the left. Recent roles have demanded her to be in great shape, just take the last Batman film the Dark Knight Rises, where she played Catwoman, as a great example. However she lost a lot of weight to look “unhealthy” for her role in Les Miserables, and as you can see, the look was dramatic.
When you think of Rapper and movie star 50 Cent, the first image that comes to mind is most likely something like how he looks in the image above/left. Barely recognisable as the same person, 50 Cent spent 3 hours in the gym everyday on a liquid only diet to lose 4 stone in weight for a role in the movie Things Fall Apart. The incredible transformation was made to play the part of a cancer patient.
Mark Wahlberg is now well known for his extensive weight loss / weight gain yo yo diets to play different movie roles. However perhaps his biggest change was for the movie Pain & Gain where he plays bodybuilder Daniel Lugo. Wahlberg packed on a huge amount of weight for the role, which many people didn’t appreciate as he starred alongside the Rock, Dwayne Johnson, who really is a monster of a man. However if you compare his physique to how he looked in Boogie Nights you can see the extent of the change.
